Student opportunities and activities

Excursions and Incursions

At Miranda Public School, learning extends well beyond the classroom. Throughout the year, students participate in a variety of excursions, incursions, performances and special learning experiences that bring the curriculum to life.

These opportunities allow students to explore new places, engage with experts, develop new skills and make meaningful connections between classroom learning and the world around them. Experiences are carefully selected to complement teaching and learning programs and are appropriate to each stage.

Students in Stage 3 also have the opportunity to participate in an overnight camp, building independence, resilience, confidence and positive relationships with their peers.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge encourages students to discover new books, explore a range of authors and genres, and develop a lifelong love of reading. Open to students from Kindergarten to Year 6, the challenge celebrates regular reading and encourages students to broaden their reading experiences. Students who successfully complete the challenge are recognised for their achievement, helping to build a strong and enthusiastic culture of reading across our school.

Public speaking

Public speaking is an important part of learning at Miranda Public School, with all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 encouraged to participate. Students develop confidence, clear communication and the ability to organise and express their ideas-valuable skills for school and for life. Beginning with class-based opportunities, students can progress to school finals, with successful speakers moving on to representative competitions. Our program ensures every student has the opportunity to find their voice and develop the confidence to use it.

Creative and performing arts

Students at Miranda Public School have opportunities to participate in a range of dance experiences and performance groups. Students develop dance skills, choreography, confidence and teamwork while rehearsing and performing alongside their peers. Our dance groups provide opportunities for students to showcase their talents at school events, community celebrations and performing arts festivals throughout the year. Participation encourages creativity, self-expression and a love of performing in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Premier's Debating Challenge

The Premier’s Debating Challenge provides Stage 3 students with opportunities to develop persuasive speaking, critical thinking, teamwork and rebuttal skills in a competitive environment. Students learn to think on their feet, listen carefully and communicate ideas with confidence. Participation can also open pathways to further representative opportunities, including regional and state debating.

Drumming

Our well-established Lunchtime Drumming Group is open to all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Students come together to learn rhythms, build confidence and enjoy making music together, with regular opportunities to perform at school events and celebrations.

Sport

Miranda Public School offers a broad and inclusive sporting program that encourages all students to be active, develop new skills and experience the enjoyment of participating in sport. Our programs cater for a range of interests, abilities and levels of experience.

Students participate in regular school sport and physical activity programs that focus on developing fundamental movement skills, teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship. Throughout the year, students also have opportunities to participate in carnivals, sporting clinics and other special sporting events.

Our competitive PSSA sporting program provides students with opportunities to represent Miranda Public School across a variety of sports. Through PSSA trials and events, talented students can also pursue representative pathways, progressing from school representation to zone, regional and higher levels of competition.

Our annual swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals provide further opportunities for participation and representation, while building school spirit and a strong sense of belonging.

At Miranda Public School, sport is about more than competition. We encourage every student to have a go, challenge themselves, support their teammates and develop the confidence, resilience and sportsmanship that come from being part of a team.

Premier's Spelling Bee

The Premier’s Spelling Bee provides students with an exciting opportunity to build vocabulary, strengthen spelling skills and develop confidence. Students put their skills to the test, progressing from class competitions to school finals and, for our successful finalists, on to the Premier’s Spelling Bee. Along the way, students challenge themselves, celebrate achievement and enjoy some friendly competition-a wonderful opportunity for our super spellers to shine!

Leadership by the Bay

Leadership by the Bay provides our student leadership team with an authentic opportunity to develop their skills through action. Students work collaboratively to design, plan and lead a project that positively contributes to the whole school. Through this process, students build confidence, teamwork, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. Leadership by the Bay empowers students to have a voice, take responsibility and make a meaningful difference within our school community.

Gardening Club

Our Lunchtime Gardening Club is a welcoming space open to all 3-6 students. Students can drop in occasionally or come along regularly to plant, grow and care for our school gardens. It’s a chance to learn about gardening, spend time outdoors, work alongside others or simply have a chat while enjoying a calm and friendly space.

Art Group

Our Lunchtime Art Group is open to any 3-6 student with an interest in being creative. There are no special skills required-just enthusiasm! Students can explore different techniques, learn new skills and have fun creating alongside others. At times, the group also works on special projects and opportunities, including entries for Not Just a Brush.

Kookie's Konservationists

Kookie’s Konservationists is Miranda Public School’s environmental sustainability group, bringing together students with a strong interest in caring for our school, community and environment. Students work collaboratively on meaningful sustainability projects, turning their ideas into practical action and helping to make a positive difference across our school.

The group also provides an authentic High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) opportunity for students with particular interests and strengths in sustainability, environmental responsibility and problem-solving. Through hands-on projects, students develop leadership, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking while learning that even small actions can create meaningful change.

Port Hacking Community of Schools- Music Program

Interested and enthusiastic Stage 3 students have the opportunity to develop their musical skills in partnership with Port Hacking High School. Students learn and rehearse together as a band, developing musicianship, confidence, teamwork and a sense of belonging through shared music-making. The program creates an exciting pathway into a band program music while fostering creativity, self-expression and a lifelong enjoyment of music.

STEM Programs

STEM learning is embedded across Kindergarten to Year 6 providing students with hands-on opportunities to explore, design, create and solve problems. Students engage with a range of technologies and resources, including robotics and coding kits, to bring their learning to life.

Through STEM, students develop creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving skills while learning to experiment, take risks and refine their ideas. Team-teaching opportunities also allow teachers to work collaboratively, providing engaging STEM experiences and sharing expertise across the school.

Kookie's Krew

Kookie’s Krew is a High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) opportunity for students across Kindergarten to Year 6 who are identified with strengths in the social-emotional domain. Krew members participate in targeted learning experiences that develop leadership, empathy, communication and collaboration skills.

Students put these skills into action by welcoming new students and families, supporting our school community, and designing, organising and leading special whole-school projects. Kookie’s Krew gives students an authentic voice and meaningful opportunities to make a positive difference at Miranda Public School.
